Race Perceptions by Sir Charles Barkley…

“We as black people are never going to be successful, not because of you white people, but because of other black people. When you are black, you have to deal with so much crap in your life from other black people.”

images (5)So says Charles Barkley. Say what you will about him, the former college and NBA basketball star never shies away from saying what’s on his mind. Another matter is that Charles Barkley didn’t always have these feelings.

Is he right? It’s for you to decide. In this case, Barkley called it a “dirty, dark secret.”

When going through a list of Barkley quotes, start with the 50 listed here.  Yes I will admit that in my excitement I did post four of them further down the page.

He was on a Philadelphia radio station recently when asked about criticism of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. The gist of the rant: Wilson isn’t black enough. It does seems as though last years Super Bowl Champions are experiencing some difficulties in there midst.

Said Sir Charles:

“For some reason we are brainwashed to think, if you’re not a thug or an idiot, you’re not black enough. If you go to school, make good grades, speak intelligent, and don’t break the law, you’re not a good black person. It’s a dirty, dark secret in the black community.

“There are a lot of black people who are unintelligent, who don’t have success. It’s best to knock a successful black person down because they’re intelligent, they speak well, they do well in school, and they’re successful. It’s just typical BS that goes on when you’re black, man.”

If nothing else, Barkley’s comments are interesting and worth discussion. images (7)

There’s plenty of it on social media. Check out these Facebook posts. There are more on Twitter.

Another comment about Wilson, this from Seattle Times columnist Jerry Brewer:

Russell Wilson is black enough for me.

We don’t have a special handshake, or communicate in slang or synchronize our pimp walk. Those are just a few of the tame, lame stereotypes of African-American behavior, perpetuated sadly by our own race almost as much as non-blacks.

50. “I can be bought. If they paid me enough, I’d work for the Klan.”

49. “You got to believe in yourself. Hell, I believe I’m the best-looking guy in the world and I might be right.”

48. “I don’t hate anyone, at least not for more than 48 minutes, barring overtime.”

47. “We better not be doing the Bulls this year. Man, they suck! Bunch of high school kids with $70 million contracts.

Damn! I hate my mother for having me too soon.”

46. “You can talk without saying a thing. I don’t ever want to be that type of person.”
