Now, the so-called “Investigation” is out of control
In what may be one of the most controversial studies of the year, researchers at Skidmore College—clearly triggered by a change in the American Psychological Association (APA) stylebook—sought to quantify the benefits of two spaces after a period at the end of a sentence. After conducting an eye-tracking experiment with 60 Skidmore students, Rebecca L. Johnson, Becky Bui, and Lindsay L. Schmitt found that two spaces at the end of a period slightly improved the processing of text during reading. The research was trumpeted by some press outlets as a vindication of two-spacers’ superiority.
Previous cognitive science research has been divided on the issue. Some research has suggested closer spacing of the beginning of a new sentence may allow a reader to capture more characters in their parafoveal vision—the area of the retina just outside the area of focus, or fovea—and thus start processing the information sooner (though experimental evidence of that was not very strong).
However, coming clearly to my mind is the notion of “thought speed” v. “speech speed” that indicates that most of us do not process what it is that we are thinking yet, our talk or speech literally suffer because of this phenomenon. A lot of experts refer to stuttering as a means of this idiosyncrasy.
I have performed in my past academic pursuits in reading guidance. I believe that everyone needs some assistance in this area. What is reading comprehension such a big indicant on the SAT’s, ACT’s, GRE’s, as well as college admittance tests?
The hyperbole surrounding this double-space or to single space should not be measured or validated in one’s reading speed. Take all the time you want or need to, then explain to me or your audience what the author was trying to convey. (307 words)
→→One additional item for tonight. I believe that if a person goes under investigation (warrants, subpoena, or otherwise) if the investigation does not assign a definitive purpose, then it is inevitable by the nature of those conducting such an examination that someone will be found guilty of something. It also appears that the rest of the American people agree with my proposition. The Special Counsel Robert Mueller exploration is actually investigating what? (380 words)
